膏藥分兩部分，一部分是膏，一部分是藥，膏和藥結(jié)合在一起，涂抹在膏藥布上就制做成膏藥，膏就是通常所說的膏藥基質(zhì)，它是膏藥中藥的載體，同時(shí)還具有粘度的性狀，能使膏藥貼在患者皮膚的表面。

膏藥基質(zhì)的構(gòu)成多種多樣，不同的膏藥具有不同的膏藥基質(zhì)成份，具體說膏藥基質(zhì)主要分成三類，一種是傳統(tǒng)型膏藥基質(zhì)，生產(chǎn)歷史悠久，多為手工操作，生產(chǎn)的配制全憑經(jīng)驗(yàn)和家傳，二是溶劑型膏藥基質(zhì)，三是免熬制膏藥基質(zhì)，四是巴布劑膏藥基質(zhì)，五是熱熔壓敏膠新型膏藥基質(zhì).
