力矩電機是一種具有軟機械特性和寬調速范圍的特種電機。這種電機的軸不是以恒功率輸出動力而是以恒力矩輸出動力。力矩電機包括:直流力矩電機、交流力矩電機、和無刷直流力矩電機。
當負載增加時，電動機的轉速能自動的隨之降低，而輸出力矩增加，保持與負載平衡。力矩電機的堵轉轉矩高，堵轉電流小，能承受一定時間的堵轉運行。由于轉子電阻高，損耗大，所產生的熱量也大，特別在低速運行和堵轉時更為嚴重，因此，電機在后端蓋上裝有獨立的軸流或離心式風機（輸出力矩較小100機座號及以下除外），作強迫通風冷卻，力矩電機配以可控硅控制裝置，可進行調壓調速，調速范圍可達1：4，轉速變化率≤10%。本系列電機的特性使其適用于卷繞，開卷、堵轉和調速等場合及其他用途，被廣泛應用于紡織、電線電纜、金屬加工、造紙、橡膠、塑料以及印刷機械等工業(yè)領域。
力矩電機的主要特點是具有軟的機械特性,可以堵轉.當負載轉矩增大時能自動降低轉速,同時加大輸出轉矩.當負載轉矩為一定值時改變電機端電壓便可調速.但轉速的調整率不好!因而在電機軸上加一測速裝置,配上控制器.利用測速裝置輸出的電壓和控制器給定的電壓相比,來自動調節(jié)電機的端電壓.使電機穩(wěn)定! 具有低轉速、大扭矩、過載能力強、響應快、特性線性度好、力矩波動小等特點，可直接驅動負載省去減速傳動齒輪，從而提高了系統(tǒng)的運行精度。為取得不同性能指標，該電機有小氣隙、中氣隙、大氣隙三種不同結構形式，小氣隙結構，可以滿足一般使用精度要求，優(yōu)點是成本較低；大氣隙結構，由于氣隙增大，消除了齒槽效應，減小了力矩波動，基本消除了磁阻的非線性變化，電機線性度更好，電磁氣隙加大，電樞電感小，電氣時間常數小，但是制造成本偏高；中氣隙結構，其性能指標略低于大氣隙結構電機，但遠高于小氣隙結構電機，而體積小于大氣隙結構電機，制造成本低于大氣隙結構電機。
